  • Contact (3) Film by Robert Zemeckis about the search for extra-terrestrial life based upon the novel by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan. A sub plot addresses the conflict between science and religion.

  • Inherit the Wind (3) A fictionalised account of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial" in which a teacher was accused of contravening the fundamentalist laws of Tennessee by teaching Darwinist theory.

  • Koyaanisqatsi (2) First film of Godfrey Reggio's 'Qatsi' trilogy (with a notable musical score by Philip Glass) whose name is a Hopi word meaning "life out of balance".

  • Local Hero (2) Whimsical comedy concerning the threat posed to a remote area of Western Scotland by a planned oil-processing plant. The real, uncredited, star of the film is the ravishing Scottish scenery which gradually beguiles even the most hardened of the oil-men.

  • Microcosmos (3) Feature film by biologists Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perennou detailing the microlife of a French meadow.

  • Song of Summer (5) Probably director Ken Russell's finest work, "Song of Summer" portrays the final years of Pantheist composer Frederick Delius. While Pantheism is not addressed directly, Delius's hatred of Christianity and love of Nature are key themes in this immensely moving film.
